To many foreigners, Vietnamese music is often not desired because they are mainly exposed to it from karaoke and Vietnamese singing loudly in the streets or at home during their free time. However, you might be surprised what you might find if you take a closer listen into Vietnamese music. You might fall in love with it just like how Batô did! Batô, a band from Düsseldorf, Germany and is 10,000km far from Vietnam, shared their Vietnamese cover video in the Vietnam Is Awesome group. It is an obvious hit with more than one thousand likes and comments from both locals and expats.
Today, we have decided to reach out to the band so we all can learn a bit more about these rising stars!
VIA: I’ve seen your post on VIA and it is awesome!!! I’m sure our members would like to know a bit more about you as well as your band, Bato. Would you mind sharing some with us?
Batô: Yes, of course!
VIA: Can you tell us a bit more about you and your band?
Batô: The Name of our Band is "Batô". We are from Germany and we're 5 people in total for this Vietnamese project. We are Family & Close Friends in One and we share our Love to Music. I am married to Quang, one of the members. He is my Husband and we have two kids together. Actually everything started out of Passion, because it all began in the Cellar of our family's House, where we always spent a lot of time with Jamsessions. A lot of friends came over and brought other friends and it always became a Kind of Live-Music Party until they all convinced us to share our passion with the world outside. This was the beginning of our Band "Batô."
VIA: There are many Vietnamese covers on your Youtube channel. Is there any special reason why you decided to cover them?
Batô: Well of course there is a reason why we choose Vietnamese covers. We are a multi culture band from Germany. I am half German and half Turkish, our Piano Player is German - Korean mixed and the 3 Brothers are Vietnamese - French mixed. They were born and raised in Germany but they don't really speak Vietnamese. Half a year ago a good friend of us introduced us to V-Pop Music and we all fell in Love right away.
Because we planned to visit Vietnam for the very first time, we decided to learn this incredible language but it ain't easy!!Vietnamese is one of the most difficult languages on earth. Especially the melodic and the pronunciation. So we started with V-Pop Covers even we don't understand a Word. Of course we needed a lot of help from native speaking people the get the pronunciation right. We are trying to learn more and more Vietnamese words through the music and it works somehow. This is the reason why we chose to cover Vietnamese Songs.
VIA: I was shocked to know you’re not Vietnamese at all because your pronunciation in those vids is just amazing. How long did it normally take to master it? You know, many foreigners would agree with me that Vietnam is one of the most difficult languages to pronounce.
Batô: Yes, Vietnamese is definitely one of the most difficult languages in the world! Like I said before, it is a very hard challenge to get the right melodic of the words besides the pronunciation. Our first V-Pop Cover Song was "Lạc Trôi". It took us nearly three months to learn the pronunciation, because it was the first time we trained the Vietnamese pronunciation and this through a very difficult song. Right now we are learning to read Vietnamese, but it is still challenging us because of all the melodic signs. And it's so tough to know that a wrong melodic of word would change the whole meaning of it. We hope we will get better and better with each song we sing.
VIA: We have seen the songs of Son Tung, Min, Phan Manh Quynh and Huong Tram on your channel? Can you share some thoughts about these singers?
Batô: The funny thing is that we just started to check out vietnamese Songs half a year ago.. So each and every Song is still NEW for us !!! This is so crazy, because there are so many smashing Hits and we don't know what to listen first!!! There are so many great And inspiring Artist and Songs and every day we find more and more HOT Burnin' Tracks... It feels like a whole new World in Music for us.
But The first V-Pop Cover we ever did was "Lạc Trôi" from Sơn Tùng.
It was also the first Song/ Music Video we ever saw.
The Song & the MV really inspired us and made us fell in Love with V-Pop. S.T. is such a great Artist and brings a phenomenal Vibe.. very cool, very deep and up to date! And it is nearly impossible to cover his songs because he sings the words sooo fast!!! We Love Him.
Our second Cover was "Người khác" from Phan Mạnh Quỳnh. When we heard that song the first time it was soo special. Even we didn't understand the lyrics in that moment, we felt the pain in his voice. He is like a Poet.. so romantic and pure.. He definitely touched our hearts and we are big Fans of him.
The third Cover we did was "Em gái mưa" by Hương Tràm. Her Voice is so warm and Deep that you getting chills everywhere. The first Time we listened to the song we felt like in a Disney Movie. The Melody and how she sang was like in a fairytale. She is a very special Artist.
The fourth Song we covered was "YÊU" by M.I.N. She is sooo beautiful and cute and her sound is so fresh!! She makes us happy and gives us a smile on our face. The sound of Voice is unique and international... very clear and light. The Moment we heard "YÊU" for the very first time, it made us happy and gives us butterfly's in our stomach. She is a Traffic Stopper!
Well, There are sooo many more vietnamese Artists we adore. This is the good thing about stepping into the new World of Music Culture. And maybe one day we find someone who wants to write some smash hits in vietnamese for us
Right now we are sooo excited to be in Vietnam soon to explore the the Culture, the People and of course the amazing Food.
We will be in Hanoi for more than 3 Weeks..
We Just can't wait...
VIA: Do you plan to have any concert in Vietnam? People love your post and they will love to see you perform in real life!
Batô: Of course we would love to perform in Vietnam.
This is the very first Time for us and we are soo excited already. We will be in Hanoi from the 21st of February until the 14th of March. We hope we will find a connection to a spot where we can perform and introduce ourselves.
Of course we will keep you updated We are also very open for recommendations or Tips of any kind.
