During Tet holiday I was able to escape Saigon and normal food that I usually eat on a daily or weekly basis. I was finally able to eat my Banh Beo, Banh Hoi, Banh Uot, etc. I actually don’t eat this stuff all year purposely so that when Tet comes I can finally eat what I’ve been craving for oh so long!
For some reason every Tet holiday I usually gain at least 1-2 kilos (3-5 pounds) within a week. I guess it is just all the food at once. And to be honest, I do not mind it. Happiness comes within and for me, when my belly is full, I am full of happiness. There really is no fresher food than you get during Tet holiday because all the family members are home and they usually produce all the food at home, if not they definitely know where to go to get fresh food every morning.
The only thing that makes me cringe is that some of the food I really don't like but in Vietnam when someone offers you food or a drink you can not say no. So for me, I sometimes have to eat food that I would not normally eat.
I suggest all expats or travelers who have no experienced Tet holiday and all the food available to at least try it once! You will never forget all the food and drinks (rice whine) and all the candies that Tet has to offer. There really is no experience like it!
