Milk Tea is a phenomenon in Vietnam at the moment - people are crazy for it!
After writing my semi-viral story about Vietnamese Coffee (here), and how addicting coffee is in Vietnam, I decided to think about what are other foods and drinks in Vietnam that I love. I wanted to show that Vietnamese coffee is not the only thing people love to drink. Even though Vietnam does have a coffee culture, I believe milk tea is slowly changing that.
The first thing that came to my mind when thinking about another drink that can complete with coffee was Milk Tea (Tra Sua). You can find just as many milk tea shops around HCMC and Hanoi as coffee shops these days. Not only are young local Vietnamese and even elder Vietnamese, but foreigners and expats like me are slowly becoming addicted to it. It is life changing and altering. There simply may not be anything better than it and I am not the only one who shares this feeling.
Yes, it is probably not the best for me, health wise, but damn it tastes good! With countless testes, flavours, shops, bubbles, you name it, there is just so many choices to choose from, and during hot, humid, sunny days, milk tea does it for me more than coffee. I guess I just want to be part of the trend, the fad, the popular crowd, and I probably will get some slack from other expats in Vietnam telling me “you are killing Vietnamese culture, you don’t like coffee? Go back to Spain!” Yeah, no! I am allowed to like what I like to like. I don’t yell at these people for being drunk all the time or being cheap, and I don’t tell them to get out of Vietnam for that, so give me some space, please (insert sarcastic smile here).
With all seriousness I do love a lot of the milk tea options nowadays, but they are starting to freak me out with some of them. I don’t think I am ready for egg milk tea, or goat cheese, how about the fish sauce milk tea…tra sua nuoc mam…? NO WAY!
I was calculating how many cups of milk tea I drink per month and how much money I spend on it monthly and it averages out to about 40 cups a month and over 1,500,000vnd. You can officially label me as a coffee addict. The best part of milk tea is that it doesn’t rip my stomach to shreds leaving me begging and searching for a bum gun! I think i will continue my milk tea ways with one slurp and bubble at a time.
Toi Yeu Tra Sua and I am proud! #toiyeutrasua
